Inigo Lopez, who currently plays for Deportivo La Coruna and who was in the 2017/18 Huesca squad, has spoken about the match-fixing allegations that have rocked Spanish football.

The defender is considered to be an intermediary by police and has spoken about one of the matches under investigation, a 1-0 win by Gimnastic de Tarragona over Huesca in the penultimate round of the 2017/18 season, when Huesca had already secured promotion.

In an interview with El Mundo, Lopez – who didn’t actually play in that match – admitted that there was a sort of gentlemen’s agreement.

“We lost against Nastic because we had a pact,” he said.

“It’s always existed in football.

“When you get to the final matches you usually look at the schedule and you talk, because you know people.

“It’s not the case that we met up or got together in some place.

“It’s simply said that ‘okay, let’s not get bothered, for those who need the points’.

“It starts there and it’s not spoken about again.

“Anyone who has played football and who has been in this world knows that this has gone on since way before us.

“What’s happening is that the betting part of it has blown it all up.”

He also spoke about the offering of bonuses to players by third parties and said he has no problem with this.

“I’ve seen that in a lot of teams and if it’s for winning then it doesn’t seem bad to me to do it,” Lopez said.

“That’s always existed.

“It doesn’t seem bad to me if it’s for winning, but I think there is a lot of hypocrisy.”
